Visceral adipose tissue-derived serpin (vaspin) is a newly discovered adipokine with insulin-sensitizing properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of aerobic or resistance exercise training on plasma vaspin concentration in overweight/obese women. Thirty overweight/obese women [body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2], aged 25–45 years were divided into three groups: control (n = 8), aerobic exercise (n = 12), and resistance exercise (n = 10) groups. Anthropometric and metabolic parameters in addition to plasma vaspin concentration were measured at baseline and after 8 weeks of training programs. Significant improvements in body weight, BMI, percent body fat (PBF), and HOMA-IR were seen in aerobic and resistance training groups. Alterations in plasma LDL-C, TC and TG levels in both training groups were significantly different compared with control group. We did not find any significant change in plasma vaspin concentration after 8 weeks of aerobic or resistance training. We conclude that aerobic or resistance training did not affect plasma vaspin levels despite significantly improves in anthropometric and metabolic parameters. Further research is needed to investigate the role of vaspin in human physiology and to elucidate the effect(s) of exercise intervention on circulating vaspin concentration.
