Abstract

“English for Students of Geology: A Strategy-based Approach” is a language learning tool for the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course in Geology. This book is designed for Iranian learners of English who are studying Geology at the BA level and have a basic knowledge of English in receptive and productive skills as well as general and specialized grammar and vocabulary fundamentals. The course ESP for Iranian students of Geology is introduced after students have passed a 3-credit course in General English at the BA level. Therefore, this book is suitable in such contexts for students who have the necessary aforementioned prerequisite. This book addresses academic and strategic reading needs in English. There are 10 units in the book, each based on a particular theme. Topics such as 'What Is Geology?', 'Why Study Earth?', 'The Branches of Geology', 'What Do Geologists Do?', 'Earth’s Layers: Crust, Mantle, & Core', 'Principal Divisions of the Earth', ' Minerals', ' Types of minerals', ' Types and Classification of Rocks', ' The Rock Cycle', 'Sedimentary Rocks', etc. are chosen from the vast field of geology. The units are comprised of tips on reading strategies, reading comprehension and vocabulary activities, which attempt to develop strategic reading comprehension while reading academic texts in English. There are instructional tips on some effective reading strategies which are well-documented to facilitate reading comprehension. The strategies introduced help in general reading and overviewing the text to detailed careful reading. There are a good number of comprehension and vocabulary check questions which also demand strategic competence to be answered. A variety of test formats are also employed (e.g., true-false, multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blanks, and explanatory questions) to present comprehension and vocabulary questions.
