Background: Medicinal plants takes much attention in many parts of the world. These plants are rich source of phytochemical compounds whit a variety of activities, including improvement of the immune system, antimicrobial activity, antioxidant and anticancer effects. Antioxidants are important in protection against oxidative stress. Haussknechtia elymaticais, one of the species of Apiaceae family,is an endemic plant of the south of Iran. Materials and methods: In this study, chelating activity of Haussknechtia elymaticais ethanol extract were measured based on Dinis method, from which chelating percent of extract and IC50 value were calculated. EDTA was also used as the standard. Results:IC50 value for EDTA standard were 19.85 micrograms per milliliter. Based on our results, chelating percent of extract were reduced from 6.08% for 5 mg/ml of extract to 0.64% for 40 mg/ml of extract. Conclusion: Results of this study were showed that this plant has low chelating activity. Because iron chelating activity of ethanol extract were decreased unexpectedly, this may be attributed to high concentration of iron and other element. Therefore, Haussknechtia elymaticais can be rich source of iron and may be useful for treatment of individual with iron deficiency. Further studies are warranted to investigate the trace element levels in this plant.
