Title Haussknechtia Elymatica a plant with medicinal use
Type Presentation
Keywords Haussknechtia Elymatica, Free radicals, Scavenging ability
Abstract Background: Plants are rich in beneficial antioxidants. Naturalantioxidants are able to increase the antioxidant capacity of the plasma and reduce the risk of certain diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Because of the toxicity of synthetic antioxidants and its side effects, the use of natural antioxidants from plant sources can be less toxic and more effective. Compounds with antioxidants properties will have protective effect against free radicals. Material method: In this study, free radicals scavenging ability of ethanol extract of Haussknechtia Elymatica leaves were evaluated using DPPH radicals. Ascorbic acid, BHA and quercetin were used as standards in this study. IC50 values were calculated from the results. Result: The IC50 values for leaf extract, ascorbic acid, BHA and quercetin, were 62.19, 2.45, 27.10 and 2.67 micrograms per milliliter, respectively. Conclusion: Considering of the results of this study it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of Haussknechtia Elymatica leaves has a good ability to scavenge free radicals. Therefore, this plant can be used to treat many diseases caused by oxidative stress. However, further studies are needed to assess another antioxidant potential of this herb can be useful.
