Background and Objective: Colon cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide, and the fourth leading cause of cancer death. Recent studies have shown that herbal remedies play an important role in the treatment of various cancers. Ferula gummosa is one of the plants that has many pharmacological effects. In traditional medicine, the gum of this plant is used to treat various diseases including abdominal pains, cholera, diarrhea, epilepsy, swelling and inflammation, and also in the treatment of neurological and cardiovascular diseases, liver disorders, diabetes, and rheumatism. Also, its antioxidant and anticoagulant activities have also been reported. This study aimed to investigate the anti-cancer effects of the plant on the SW480 cell line. Materials and Methods: After preparing the gum of Ferula gummosa, SW480 cells were cultured and treated with different concentrations of the gum for 24 and 48 hours. The cytotoxic effects of the gum on the SW480 cell line were evaluated by using the MTT method. Results: The results obtained for the SW480 cell line show that at the lowest concentration of the gum which is used in this study (2µg/ml), the extract of this plant has an inhibitory effect on cell growth, and the IC50 value of the gum for this cell line was calculated to be 0.6346 µg/ml. It seems that more studies are needed to evaluate its applications in treatment of colorectal cancer.
