Abstract

Writing is an essential skill for language learning and graphic organizers have been widely used to facilitate this skill for learners. Graphic organizers are visual tools that help students organize their thoughts before writing. The current study indicated the positive effectiveness of using graphic organizers as a prewriting conceptual strategy. This study came up with a positive approach, which is graphic organizers. It also facilitated teaching writing skills to students and encouraged English language teachers to use the current strategy in teaching that made students participate and activate their thinking and abilities. 50 participants, Master of English L2 learner's, were assign to two groups. Both groups had the same teacher. The control group received traditional instructions on writing a paragraph while the experimental group was additionally ask to plan their writing on the graphic organizer in the pre- writing phase and compose a paragraph based on the constructed organizer. All students were ask to take pre- and post-tests to track their writing performance before and after the experimental group received a tutorial through a course of 6 sessions on how to use and benefit from graphic organizers. After implementing the intervention, a comparison of the students’ results in the pre- and post-tests showed a noticeable improvement in the ability of the experimental group students to create a better paragraph in terms of point of view, unity, cohesion, development, organization and thinking. Moreover, the results of the qualitative data revealed that participants benefited from graphic organizers in many different areas, such as improving understanding, becoming able to identify their strengths and weaknesses, decreased anxiety, increased focus, self- confidence, and motivation. In addition, the results of this study indicate the need for English teachers and material developers to provide ESL learners with graphic organization strategy instructions and help them develop the habit of using appropriate strategies while dealing with writing tasks. The results highlight the impact of using graphic organizers as an educational strategy focused on the pre-writing strategy in developing the writing performance on MA English L2 Iraqi learner's .
