Abstract

Introduction: It seems that the best sports performance is followed by the best postural stability. In this study we decided to determine if ankle kinesio taping alter the foot stability and improve its dynamic balance. Method: Sixteen healthy athletes (20-30 years old age) with neutral foot posture (navicular drop 5-9 mm) participated voluntarily. They had full ankle range of motion, without repeated injury in the past 3 months, no chronic pain, no inflammation and giving way, without any brain trauma or vestibular disease. Dynamic postural stability evaluated by star excursion balance test (SEBT) on the dominant leg in 8 directions. They performed each test 3 times, before and after 8 shape kinesio taping. The average of 3 reaches of each direction was calculated and all scores were normalized to the subject leg’s height (variable [cm]/height [cm]) before analyses. We used Paired T-test to analysis the data. (α≤ 0.05) Results: Dynamic postural stability was significantly difference after kinesio taping. There were significant differences in anterior (P=0.010), posterior (P=0.025) and posterolateral directions (P=0.000) in neutral foot posture. Conclusion: Our results suggest that kinesio taping can improve dynamic postural stability by stimulating the neuromuscular control system. It seems that the effect of kinesio taping is not mechanical correction, but it can influence on proprioception mechanoreceptors and it has an important role in sport injury prevention.
