Abstract

Since a couple of decades ago, Sitcoms have been used in the EFL classrooms to promote authenticity and diversity for the language learners through watching movies. In the same direction, several studies have been undertaken to investigate the impact of Sitcoms on improving EFL learners' comprehension of the movies. However, it seems that the effectiveness of Sitcoms in improving the language learners' auditory comprehension has not been studied sufficiently. To do so, the researcher used a quasi-experimental research design. 120 intermediate and upper- intermediate language learners were divided into control and experimental groups. Auditory comprehension tests and motivation scale were used to collect the data. Independent samples-t- tests were used. Results showed that the use of Sitcoms has significant impact on improving Iranian intermediate and upper-intermediate language learners’ auditory comprehension. Results also showed that the use of the Sitcoms positively affects the language learners’ motivation for learning English language. It can be concluded that EFL teachers need to be aware of the importance of movies in general and Sitcoms in particular. Teachers of speaking and listening skills need to provide the language learners with Sitcoms to promote their speaking and listening skill.
