Abstract

Academic writing, which is of paramount importance in today’s academic milieu, is an enterprise not limited to the content conveyance, but a socialization process through which writers project their ‘authorial identity’ and ‘authorial voice’. Ergo, the current study delved deeply into the issue and comprised of three main phases including hypothesizing a model of authorial identity in Iran, developing and validating a questionnaire based on the model and testing the model based on the questionnaire data. In this study, there were 30 respondents for the initial piloting, 60 for the reliability, 100 for the exploratory factory analysis, and 175 for confirmatory factor analysis. Firstly, a model of authorial identity was developed based on Ivanic’s (1998) model of authorial identity along with reviewing the related literature and consulting with a cadre of experts. Secondly, a questionnaire was developed and validated based upon the hypothesized model. Accordingly, to develop the questionnaire, we went through a number of steps including item pool generation, piloting, reliability estimation and validation. The reliability of the questionnaire estimated through Cronbach’s alpha was 0.73. Following that, exploratory factor analysis identified four factors, namely authorial voice and identity, authorial role, authorial background, and authorial style. Thirdly, structural equation modelling through AMOS was employed to test the model and the final statistical indices revealed that the model was fit
