Abstract Preparation, improvement and characterization of nano-bioactive glass-ceramic/zirconia composite coatings for improvement of bioactivity of 316L stainless steel implant and toughness and biodegradability of bioactive glass was aim this work. Composite powder was prepared by sol-gel method and thermal properties of the prepared powder were studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA). This composite performed on 316L stainless steel (SS) substrate by sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to investigate the microstructure and morphology of the coating. Topography of surface was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique. After heat treatment in 700°C, bioglass was crystallized partly and nano-hydroxyapatite (HA) and tetragonal zirconia formed that confirmed the bioactivity and thoughness of glass-ceramic prepared by sol-gel method. By SEM micrograph some hillocks and nanorods can be observed and due to growth of nanowire biodegradable can be improved.
