Abstract Developing new industries and sectors in the tourism industry, such as sport tourism, is one of the most profitable and important plans of every government. As the third largest source of income for every government is the tourism industry, sports tourism can improve the quality of life for residents by attracting tourists and influence the effective participation of local communities in the economic recovery of the industry. The income of the developed countries from the sports tourism is more than 20 billion dollars annually, however, in our country little to no attention has been paid to the sports tourism. Considering historical, archeological and natural diversity, Iran has a strong capacity for developing the tourism industry. Therefore, investment in sports tourism is recommended, and to this end measures such as organizing sports events on national and international levels, creating sites for sports tourism, developing and marketing web sites to promote recreational attractions, attracting domestic and foreign investment, hiring education specialists in sports tourism sector management, and institutions and organizations related to sports tourism can be considered.
