Abstract

Salvia macilenta Boiss. is an aromatic subshrub which grows wild in some parts of Iran (Kerman, Hormozgan, Baluchistan, and Yazd provinces) [1]. This plant is a member of the genus Salvia (Laminaceae) whose antioxidant activity and neuroprotective action has been shown previously [2]. In this study, Salvia macilenta Boiss. samples were collected from wild populations Kerman and Baluchistan Provinces in June 2014. The essential oils of two populations were isolated by hydrodistillation method. The chemical composition of the essential oils was examined by GC and GC–MS and then compared. The main ingredients in the Kerman sample were α-pinene (29.01%), p-cymene (10.67%), veridiflorol (9.08%), α-eudesmol (8.68%), bornyl acetate (7.31%) and borneol (4.86%) whereas principal components identified from Baluchistan spacemen were α-eudesmol (35.59%), α-pinene (7.67%), bornyl acetate (7.62%), E-nerolidol (6.49%) and veridiflorol (5.93%). The results showed that the diversity in the volatile compounds could be considered as chemotaxonomic importance and it may be attributed to their different ecological and geographical origin.
