One of the most helpful strategies for the synthesis of the title compounds1 is that of multicomponent reactions (MCRs). In MCRs three or more reactants form products such that all or most of the initial atoms are present in the final product. This has clear benefits in terms of cost, efficiency and environmental stewardship.
