Abstract

Supramolecular systems containing calixarenes have received much attention as basic molecular scaffolds for building appropriate binding core for ions recognition as well as for neutral guest molecules.1 Compared to other molecular systems, calixarenes have some advantages such as a hydrophobic cavity and easy functionalization at the upper or lower rims; moreover, the flexible core can be modified for well-defined substrate binding.2 The structure of receptors typically contain one or more of the following moieties as their binding sites; 1) Schiff base moieties containing C=N bonds that can bind to metal ions and act as a chromophore,3 2) moieties containing C_O bonds that can bind to metal ions,4 3) moieties containing C_N bonds that can recognize anions5 and 4) 1,2,3-triazole units formed through the click reaction that acts as a good recognition site, because it can coordinate to metal cations and also identify anions through hydrogen bonding.6-7 In this study, the synthesis of a novel upper rim substituted calix[4]arene containing sensing units such as ferrocene by click chemistry for the recognition of ions is described. The structure of calix[4]arene derivative was characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectra. The interaction of this host molecule with guest ions were studied by cyclic voltammetry experiments. During the Seminar, we will report the detail of these results.
