Abstract

Objective: Although cancer affects the person’s mental health, sense of disappointment and lack of hope seem to be the biggest problem for the patient at the time. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of spiritual well-being, psychological hardiness, and perceived social support on hope in cancer patients. Materials and Methods: A sample of one hundred and ninety eight voluntary and unpaid women with cancer diagnosis, aged between 17 and 75 years old (46.15 ± 11.81 years), were selected through convenience sampling in Sari, Iran. All participants were asked to complete the Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Ahvaz Hardiness Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and Hope Scale. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS-22.0 and Amos-20.0 statistics packages. Results: Using structural equation modeling, the results showed that the direct (p = .001), and indirect (p = .016) effect of spiritual well-being on hope was positive and significant. Conclusion: In female patients with cancer disease, the positive effect of spiritual well-being on hope can be explained through the mediating role of psychological hardiness and perceived social support.
